The Primeira Liga, officially known as Liga Portugal Betclic for sponsorship reasons, is the top tier of professional football in Portugal. Founded in 1934, it is organized by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional (LPFP) and is part of the UEFA confederation. Since the 2014–15 season, the league has consisted of 18 teams, with the bottom three teams relegated to Liga Portugal 2. The league is historically dominated by the “Big Three” clubs—Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP—which have won all but two of the championships. Benfica holds the record with 38 titles, followed by Porto with 30 and Sporting CP with 20. The Primeira Liga has gained international recognition, ranking sixth in UEFA’s national league rankings as of 2021. It has also been acknowledged by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), reflecting its competitive nature and the quality of football played.
