Will there be a The Dreaming Boy is a Realist sequel? Everything we know

Anime lovers fell head over heels for series, ‘The Dreaming Boy is a Realist,’ which blended its romance with some real character development, and there are many fans who are anticipating news of a season 2. Although a renewal of the series has not yet been officially announced by Studio Gokumi or the creators, the positive reception of the anime and its growing fanbase indicate that Season 2 may not be too far off.

Here’s what we know about “The Dreaming Boy is a Realist” Season 2, including its possible release date and what fans can look forward to.

Mixed Critical Reception

“The Dreaming Boy is a Realist” Season 1 received a divided audience. Though some viewers praised its heartfelt narrative, others pointed to a slow start and schmaltzy pacing at times. Fans of the original light novel pointed out that the adaptation had cut certain key moments from the source material. On the other hand websites like MAL and IMDB have rated the score 6.6/10, which is a decent score to have for an anime.

Regardless of these qualms, the season finale satisfied fans. The climax came when Aika Natsukawa told Wataru Sajou what she really felt, and although only faintly in anime, she is hoping for romance in a second season. If renewed for Season 2, it further could explore their romance as they navigate the ups and downs of coupledom.

Potential Release Date for Season 2

Currently, no official announcement has been made concerning the renewal status or the release date of “The Dreaming Boy is a Realist” Season 2. The word back then was that there would be an announcement by Spring 2024, but with 2025 creeping ever closer, that seems increasingly improbable.

On November 18, 2023, the series was renewed for a first season, which premiered on July 4, 2024. By this timeframe, fans anticipated an update on the sequel by late 2024. Production delays or other unexpected situations could delay tentative release dates.

Until more information arrives, the safest bet would be to follow announcements from Studio Gokumi or the creators, who would have accurate news about the future of the anime.

About the Series

The Dreaming Boy is a Realist” follows two high school students, Wataru Sajou and Aika Natsukawa, who are caught up in a “two-way unrequited love story.” When he realizes that his obsessive attention annoys Aika, Wataru withdraws, assuming he isn’t good enough to pursue her.

Wataru, ironically, attracts Aika when he stops chasing her. As Wataru increases his involvement in her life, Aki, aware of her feelings, also becomes increasingly involved in his, another clever twist of fate paralleling Wataru’s own actions earlier on.

The anime is based on Okemaru’s web novel first serialized in December 2018. This was later adapted into a light novels series by Hobby Japan under the HJ Bunko imprint. Eight volumes have been published as of yet.
