Ligue 1

Ligue 1, officially known as Ligue 1 McDonald’s for sponsorship reasons, is the premier professional football league in France. Established in 1930 and rebranded as Ligue 1 in 2002, it is the highest level in the French football league system and is administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). As of the 2023–24 season, Ligue 1 features 18 clubs, including one team from Monaco. The league operates on a promotion and relegation system with Ligue 2, the second tier of French football. The season runs from August to May, with each club playing 34 matches—one home and one away against every other team. Ligue 1 is renowned for its competitive nature and is ranked as the fifth-best league in Europe, following the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga. Paris Saint-Germain is the league’s most successful club, having won 12 titles, including the 2023–24 championship.
