La Liga, officially known as LaLiga EA Sports for sponsorship reasons since 2023, is Spain’s premier professional football division. Established in 1929, La Liga is governed by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional and features 20 teams competing in a 38-match season. Real Madrid holds a record 36 titles, with Barcelona winning the inaugural season and accumulating 26 championships. Historically, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been dominant, particularly from the 1950s onwards. In the 1940s, clubs like Valencia and Atlético Madrid were prominent, while Athletic Club and Real Sociedad enjoyed success in the 1980s and 1990s. La Liga was ranked the top European league from 2013 to 2019 and has produced the continent’s top-rated club more often than any other league. It leads in UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Ballon d’Or awards, showcasing its elite status in global football.
