The Eredivisie, established in 1956, is the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands. It has grown into one of Europe’s premier leagues, currently ranked as the 6th-best by UEFA as of the 2023–24 season. The league comprises 18 clubs, with each team playing every other team twice during the season—once at home and once away. At the end of each season, the bottom two clubs are relegated to the Eerste Divisie, the second level of Dutch football, while the top two teams from the Eerste Divisie are promoted to the Eredivisie. The third-to-last team in the Eredivisie faces a promotion/relegation playoff against top Eerste Divisie teams. The Eredivisie champions are crowned the Dutch national champions, with Ajax leading the title count with 36 championships, followed by PSV Eindhoven with 25, and Feyenoord with 16. These three clubs, known as the “Big Three” of Dutch football, have dominated the league, winning all but three titles since 1965.
