The Washington Capitals, founded in 1974 as an NHL expansion team, are based in Washington, D.C., and compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. Owned by Ted Leonsis through Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the Capitals have been a dominant force in the NHL. After initially playing at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, they moved to Capital One Arena in 1997. The team achieved its greatest success in 2018, winning the Stanley Cup under the leadership of captain Alex Ovechkin. Known for their passionate fanbase and high-octane style, the Capitals continue to be a perennial playoff contender.
