Dayotchanculle Oswald Upamecano (born 27 October 1998) is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Bayern Munich and the France national team. Born in Évreux, Normandy, and of Bissau-Guinean and Senegalese descent, Upamecano was named after his great-grandfather, a former king in Guinea-Bissau. Raised in La Madeleine, a neighborhood with a strong African immigrant community, he overcame dyslexia and stuttering as a child through speech therapy. Upamecano started his football journey with local club Évreux, alongside future stars like Ousmane Dembélé. His potential was evident early on, leading him to join the Valenciennes youth academy in 2013. Known for his physicality and defensive prowess, he modeled his game after Sergio Ramos, eventually emerging as a key figure in defense for both club and country.
