Fresh off capturing a gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Vincent Trocheck might be packing his bags once again. With the March 6 NHL trade deadline rapidly approaching, the New York Rangers are officially in a retooling phase, making the 32-year-old veteran center one of the most highly coveted assets on the market.
According to recent league reports, the Minnesota Wild currently hold the pole position in the Trocheck sweepstakes, though the Detroit Red Wings remain hot on their heels. If Trocheck is willing to waive his 12-team no-trade clause, a deal could be finalized well before deadline day.

The Top Contenders: Minnesota and Detroit
The Minnesota Wild view Trocheck as the perfect missing piece down the middle. Wild General Manager Bill Guerin, who selected Trocheck for the triumphant Team USA Olympic squad, is intimately familiar with what the two-way forward brings to the ice. Following Minnesota’s massive acquisition of superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes, slotting Trocheck into a star-studded lineup could cement the Wild as legitimate Stanley Cup favorites this spring.
However, do not count out the Detroit Red Wings. General Manager Steve Yzerman has meticulously built one of the NHL’s deepest prospect pools and has the draft capital to construct a highly competitive trade package.
For Detroit, the on-ice fit is seamless. Trocheck would immediately slot in as the 2C behind captain Dylan Larkin. This move would create a domino effect, allowing forwards like J.T. Compher and Andrew Copp to slide down into more favorable matchups in the bottom six. The primary hurdle for Detroit will simply be price; Yzerman has historically been cautious about mortgaging the franchise’s long-term future for immediate playoff reinforcements.
The Cost of Doing Business: Contract and Production
Any acquiring team isn’t just getting a rental. Trocheck brings cost certainty, carrying a highly manageable $5.625 million Average Annual Value (AAV) through his age-36 season. As the NHL salary cap continues to climb, a sub-$6 million cap hit for a proven, championship-tested center becomes an increasingly team-friendly asset.
While his offensive output has cooled slightly from his previous 70-plus point peaks, he remains incredibly effective. Sitting at 36 points through 43 games in the 2025-26 campaign (putting him on pace for around 57 points), executives around the league believe that surrounding him with a fresh supporting cast could easily reignite his high-end scoring touch.

The Rangers’ Reset Underway
The writing is on the wall in the Big Apple. Rangers General Manager Chris Drury has already signaled to the fanbase that a major roster reset is underway, highlighted by the recent blockbuster that sent superstar Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings.
With both the Wild and Red Wings hungry to bring a Stanley Cup to their respective cities, and the Rangers eager to stockpile future assets, the foundation for a deal is set. As one NHL insider noted, both sides recognize the reality of the situation and are motivated to find common ground. Now, the hockey world waits to see which contender steps up to the plate before March 6.
