Why Joey Fans Were Ready To Riot Over This FRIENDS Prank on Matt LeBlanc

David Schwimmer played a prank on Friends co-star Matt LeBlanc that would enrage any Joey fan. The prank resurfaced recently courtesy of an Instagram fanpage account and is one of the show’s most entertaining behind-the-scenes moments. Schwimmer had tricked LeBlanc into eating a spit piece of food that led to a moment so legendary, that the entire cast tried not to laugh.

LeBlanc Angry Over Insidious Practical Joke

While Friends fans loved the on-screen relationship between Joey and Ross, behind the scenes, Schwimmer had a bit of a wicked side. LeBlanc told the tale on The Graham Norton Show, providing some insight for fans about the way Schwimmer would pull one over on LeBlanc. All of this went down during Ross’s fleeting taste of Rachel’s weird trifle invention. In character, Schwimmer attempted to conceal his disgust before the camera as he grimaced biting into the weird treat. When the cameras stopped rolling, he discreetly expelled the food back onto his plate — without LeBanc seeing.

It was, of course, what Schwimmer had just spat out and, unwittingly, as they prepared for another take, LeBlanc went to scoop the trifle from his plate. “Nobody says anything to me,” LeBlanc joked. It wasn’t until the wrap party, where the blooper reel was playing, that LeBlanc caught on to Schwimmer’s fast one.

This prank recently resurfaced online thanks to fan accounts like @theworldwithfriends on Instagram, igniting new giggles and remarks from fans of all ages. Schwimmer’s prank on one co-star is now among the most famous tricks ever pulled on Friends set, an incident that only serves to bolster the mythology of what happened outside of the cameras.

Schwimmer also made a rare public outing recently, in Beverly Hills on Thursday, November 7, where he honored his late Friends co-star Matthew Perry. The Friends cast had an undeniable bond together, and Schwimmer’s muted evening out with Perry was a testament to that — but also perhaps a reminder of just how special Perry’s humor was.

Though Friends fans aren’t seeing it on HBO Max anymore, the sitcom still lives on in a way with its fans streaming over at Peacock and Apple TV.
