San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers, often called the Niners, are a professional American football team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the NFL as part of the NFC West division and play their home games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, 38 miles southeast of San Francisco. The team’s name pays homage to the prospectors of the 1849 Gold Rush.Founded in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), the 49ers joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. They were the first major professional sports franchise in San Francisco and are the NFL’s 10th oldest franchise. The team has been owned by Italian American families—the Morabitos and DeBartolos—since its inception. Throughout its history, the 49ers have played at iconic venues like Kezar Stadium, Candlestick Park, and now Levi’s Stadium. The team is currently led by head coach Kyle Shanahan and CEO Jed York.
