Real Betis Balompié, commonly known as Real Betis, is a professional football club based in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. Founded in 1907, the club competes in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football, and plays its home matches at the 60,721-seat Estadio Benito Villamarín. Real Betis has a storied history, having won the La Liga title in 1935 and the Copa del Rey three times, in 1977, 2005, and 2022. Despite experiencing several relegations over the years, the club’s supporters remain fiercely loyal, with their motto being “¡Viva el Betis manque pierda!” (“Long live Betis even if they lose!”). The club’s name, “Betis,” originates from the Roman name for the Guadalquivir River, which flows through Seville. In 1914, the title “Real” (Royal) was granted after the club received patronage from King Alfonso XIII. Real Betis shares a fierce rivalry with Sevilla FC, reflecting the intense football culture of Seville.
