Ligue 1

Ligue 1, officially known as Ligue 1 McDonald’s for sponsorship reasons, is the premier French professional football league and the top tier of the French football league system. Established on 11 September 1932 as National, it was renamed Division 1 before becoming Ligue 1 in 2002. The league features 18 clubs as of the 2023–24 season, following a reduction from 20 teams to enhance competitiveness. Each team plays 34 matches, facing every other club twice in a home-and-away format. Ligue 1 operates with a promotion and relegation system with Ligue 2, ensuring fluid movement between the top two tiers of French football.

The league is renowned for its high level of competition and has been ranked fifth in Europe as of 2024, behind the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) holds the record for the most Ligue 1 titles with twelve championships, while Lyon boasts the most consecutive titles, winning seven straight from 2002 to 2008. Nantes is notable for its impressive unbeaten streak of 32 matches and longest home unbeaten run of 92 matches. The current champions, PSG, secured their record twelfth title in the 2023–24 season.
