The Carolina Hurricanes, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, are an NHL team playing in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division. Founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers in the WHA, they quickly found success, winning the Avco World Trophy in 1973. After joining the NHL in 1979, the franchise relocated to North Carolina in 1997 and became the Hurricanes. Carolina reached their first Stanley Cup Finals in 2002 but lost to the Detroit Red Wings. In 2006, the Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Edmonton Oilers, marking North Carolina’s first major sports championship.
